Overnight French Toast with Orange Sauce

Marmalade Cream Stuffed French Toast

This overnight French toast is unusually good and made with thick slices of French bread.  You can stuff each slice with a jam and cream cheese filling, make it ahead of time, and bake it the next morning.

About the Overnight French Toast

Overnight French toast is almost like bread pudding. It sits overnight in the egg mixture to become soft and rich and be baked in the morning.

You can make overnight French toast in a single layer on a baking sheet, stuffed and baked as a layer of sandwiches, or layered as individual slices to be even more like bread pudding.

Overnight French Toast with Orange Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

For the orange sauce:

Directions

  1. Generously grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, beat together the cream cheese, jam, nutmeg, and one teaspoon orange zest.
  3. Cut a pocket in each slice of bread by slicing two-thirds of the way through the bread.  Stuff filling into each pocket.  You can also use thinner slices and make sandwiches with the filling instead. Place the sandwiched bread in the prepared baking pan.
  4. In another bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, and vanilla.  Pour the egg mixture over the bread, covering each piece.  Cover the pan with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
  5. To make the orange sauce stir together the orange juice, zest, sugar, and cornstarch in a small pan.
  6. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until thick and bubbly.  Cook for an additional couple of minutes to thicken. Set aside.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Bake the French toast for 30 to 35 minutes.  Serve with the orange sauce.
