Here’s how Debbie makes her teriyaki onion burgers:

  1. Heat up the grill and form the hamburger patties.  Use a hamburger press to uniformly shape the burgers and compress the meat.
  2. Season the burgers.  When the grill is hot, cook the burgers turning them once.  Do not press down the meat with the back of a spatula.
  3. Slice sweet onions just less than 1/4-inch thick.  While the burgers are cooking, place the onion slices in a skillet with 2-3 tablespoons of butter.  Cook the onion slices over medium heat, stirring occasionally until they are soft and start to brown.
  4. Spread mayonnaise or flavored mayonnaise on the buns.  Place the burgers on the buns.  Place the cooked onions on the burgers.  Slather with teriyaki sauce.  Place optional tomato slices, cheddar cheese, bacon, or mushrooms on the burgers if desired.  Serve hot.
