How to Make Streuselkuchen with Your Bread Machine

StreuselkuchenYou can use your bread machine to make streuselkuchen by using the dough setting on your bread machine.

Streuselkuchen is usually made with a dough that is sweeter than bread dough and often egg rich.  Though you can use an unsweetened bread dough, we recommend adding sugar and an egg to a bread mix or using a sweetened dough recipe.

Start with a mix for a large 1 1/2 to 2-pound loaf of bread.  Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of sugar.  Add an egg to the water.  If the mix calls for one cup water, for this purpose, the egg and water mixed together should measure one cup.  (Temperature is not so critical since you will not be baking in the machine and rise times are not set.)   Your resulting dough should be a little wetter and softer than normal.  Watch the dough ball.  Depending on the mix you may need to dribble in a teaspoon or so of water to get the dough ball soft enough.

Set your machine on the dough setting.  When complete, press the dough into a pan and proceed with your recipe.

A large bread mix is going to produce more dough than what you need for an 8 1/2 x 13-inch pan.  Set a third of the dough aside for sweet rolls or use a 10 x 15-inch pan.  If you use a large pan, use two cans of pie filling.
